Do you know the history behind some of the key aspects of a wedding? We are taking a look back in time to see where these traditions came from! 1. Engagements and wedding rings are worn on your "ring finger" because it is thought that there is a vein that leads directly to the heart.
2. Queen Victoria started the white wedding dress trend in 1840. 3. Matching bridesmaids dresses are good luck - they date back to Roman times where bridesmaids would dress exactly like the bride to confuse evil spirits and bring good luck to the marriage. 4. Brides wear veils because Greeks and Romans believed it protected her from evil spirits. It also represents the bride's virginity, innocence, and modesty. 5. "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" comes from an old English rhyme. Something old represents continuity, something new offers optimism for the future, something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness, and something blue represents purity, love and fidelity. 6. The Roman goddess Juno rules over marriage and childbirth, hence the popularity of June weddings. 7. The word "honeymoon" comes from Ancient Norse bridal couples who went into hiding after the wedding, and a family member would bring them a cup of honey wine for 30 days - or one moon. 8. The diamond engagement ring idea came from medieval times, where the groom would often have to pay for the bride's hand in marriage. Precious stones were often included in his payment. by Madison Odryna Source: http://bit.ly/2ycMYIT (information from Brides.com and Bride and Groom) Photo by Julie Surette Photography from Leslie's wedding at the Inn at Newfound Lake
