In a bygone era of cruising, passengers showed their appreciation for crew member service by tipping those who went above and beyond the call of duty. These days, if cruise gratuities aren't prepaid, most non-luxury lines automatically add tips of anywhere from $14 to $20 per person, per day, to passengers' shipboard accounts, usually depending on the type of cabin in which passengers are booked.

Tipping abroad requires more than cash and generosity; a little research is essential for travelers to know exactly who deserves a tip and how much to give.
Like moths to a flame, some cruise passengers line up at guest relations the last day to remove their gratuities. The $12.95 per-day gratuity, on average, seems better removed than given to some people. This isn’t a cruise line demographic problem; it’s an industry wide issue. Gratuities are designed to reward the stateroom stewards, the dining service team, and behind-the-scenes crew working incredibly long hours, often seven days a week, just to make your vacation as memorable as possible. |
