If you’re like me, the week before your vacation is usually crammed full of last-minute travel preparations. In the flurry of laundry and packing, don’t forget to take care of a few important tasks before you take off. 1. Copy Your Passport
Make two copies, preferably in color, of your passport’s information page. (That’s the one with your photo.) Leave one copy with someone who isn’t traveling, and take the other with you but separate from the original. You could also save a copy to the cloud or your mobile device. Having this information can be very useful if your passport is lost or stolen during your trip. 2. Notify Your Credit Card Companies If your bank notices that you’re suddenly using your card in a foreign country, or even another state, they may freeze the account for suspected fraud. Many banks offer the option to notify them of your travel plans in advance, which can help to avoid having your card declined unexpectedly. While you have your wallet out, make copies of the front and back of each card you’re bringing, and then carry them with your passport copy. 3. Label Your Luggage Make sure that you have a tag on each piece of luggage that contains your name and current contact info. Add the same information INSIDE your bag as well, in case the outer tag is lost or damaged. Even better, include a copy of your travel itinerary so that airline personnel might have an easier time tracking you down to deliver your delayed luggage. 4. Check Your Connections Do you know how much it will cost to use voice, text, or data service at your destination? Verify with your carrier what the potential costs are, whether an international package or plan is available, and which device settings will help you avoid charges. Don’t assume that free Wi-Fi is readily available during your vacation, or that speeds will be as fast as back home. Many international resorts and cruise ships only offer internet access for a fee, and the connection may be limited.
